Integrating Geophysics Into Reservoir Engineering

Iterative Integration of:

  • Seismic Attribute Analysis
  • 4D Seismic and/or Time Lapse Logging
  • Multi-well Petrophysics and Pressure Transient Analysis (PTA)
  • Advanced OFMÔ (Oilfield Manager) Analysis
  • Modern Material Balance Analysis Tools
  • 3D Visualization Tools

Horizontal Well Placement Example

Seismic data was calibrated to reservoir pressure and production data, taken at regular time intervals. The graphic shows the completed 3D geocellular model fully populated with current well placement locations. The model was used to define the optimum infill well path, shown in yellow. The well encountered near original reservoir conditions and was highly productive.

The rewards include:

  • Better understanding of reservoir architecture and depositional anomalies.
  • Improved mapping of pay, porosity and permeability distribution, fluid content and production characteristics.
  • Identification of by-passed oil and water influx.
  • Identification of potential flow barriers leading to more reliable placement of infill wells.
  • Optimized waterflood and EOR operations, especially when combined with tracer survey data.

Water Injection Example

This horizon slice, taken from a seismic Coherence Cube, is the top of the reservoir. A tracer survey indicated that injected water was quickly traveling from INJ-4 to PRO-1, but its path was unknown. Analysis of the coherence data revealed the likely path, indicated by the long blue pathway, allowing the operator to revise the water injection voidage replacement strategy in this area of the reservoir.

To achieve these objectives, RPS Energy has developed close working relationships with geophysical and geological associates such as the Reservoir Technologies Group of Core Laboratories.
