| Sour Well Construction and Workovers |
|
In addition to instructing courses in completion design and equipment selection that include sections dealing with special sour well requirements, APA has been involved in numerous sour oil and gas well completion and workover designs and programs for onshore and offshore wells. Moreover, all of the APA well construction specialists have been involved with well design, drilling, completion, workover and well servicing work for sour wells with their previous employers.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION/SERVICES PROVIDED BY RPS-APA |
| Foothills, Canada |
Various facets of completions design for deep, HPHT, critical sour gas wells. Downhole hydrate control requirements including chemical injection and heater string options. Coupling selection and landing condition specification to minimise seal movement and facilitate use of non-upset couplings that are weak in compression. Packer failure analysis and audit. |
| Moose Mountain, Jumping Pound, Caroline, Alberta |
Stimulation programs on sour gas wells including the use of coiled tubing to unload the stimulation fluids. Planning workovers to increase deliverability, including reperforation using wireline activated gun drop equipment and larger tubing installation for higher flow capacity. Reviewed heater string and downhole injection requirements for hydrate control during start-up. Developed surface methanol injection procedures for wells without chemical injection facilities. |
| Limestone, Alberta |
Programming sulphur plug removal using sulphur solvent spotted with coiled tubing. Horizontal well logging on coiled tubing including use of the downhole camera. Programming snubbing operation to fish a gauge ring out of a deepset profile. New well pay zone drilling, completion and clean up procedures. Multi-frac horizontal well (MFHW) completion program for acid fracturing of low permeability fractured carbonates.
|
| Rosevear, Alberta |
Suspended well re-entry review for well testing operations. Workover planning to control downhole sulphur, hydrate and organic deposits including use of small diameter chemical injection and heater strings as well as detail stress analysis.
|
| Rainbow, Alberta |
Sour (10% H2S) oil well workover and recompletion programs with continuous feed of salt water to prevent hydrocarbon influx from underpressured carbonates. Work included packer milling; cement squeezes; reperforation operations and stimulations. Also programmed wireline intervention in multi-packer completions to change zones.
|
| Ram River, Alberta |
Programming and planning of coil tubing drilling of an obstruction within the tailpipe in a 25% H2S with the well flowing. Programming the shooting off of a packer extension tube.
|
| Waterton |
Review of completion history and well performance of a deep, highly depleted, 35% H2S gas condensate field in fractured carbonates. Analysed pressure surveys and liquid loading issues. Recommended a reduction in wellhead pressures with additional compression, surface system modifications and debottlenecking. Also recommended larger tubing; annular or casing flow for some of the better wells to increase offtake and ultimate recovery. Subsequent study looked at High Volume Artificial Lift options for recovery of condensate and/or to increase gas production from wells with blocked inflow or excessive liquid loading. Programming of the workovers to convert selected wells to casing flow; install downhole velocity strings in the lower portion of the tubing; and install or perforate packer tailpipes.
|
| Leduc D-3, Alberta |
Field review to rank workover and water shut-off opportunities. Programming of several large (30 ton) foamed cement squeezes and associated workover operations.
|
| Foothills, Alberta |
Worst case blowout sulphur release rate calculations and emergency response zone (ERZ) definition, based on new CAPP guidelines. Deliverability and thermal modelling to assess downhole hydrate risks.
|
| Madura Straight |
Completion design and production casing review for an exploration well test in a HPHT sour well, including the assessment of a packerless completion with concentric tubing strings. Discussion of sour well gas well designs as part of a completion equipment and planning schools.
